READ MOREA poker vibrator is only ever as good as the motor turning it. Here is how frequency, coupling and shaft choices decide whether a pour comes out dense, or full of voids nobody sees until the formwork comes off.
Concrete looks solid the moment it leaves the chute, but it is not. Entrapped air sits against formwork, beneath rebar and in every corner the mix never reached. Left alone, those pockets become honeycombing, weak cover and a surface that begins to fail years earlier than it should.
Consolidation is the cure, and electric vibrator motors are the tools that deliver it. We have been manufacturing these drive units in Ningbo for around fifteen years, mostly for brands and importers who put their own label on the box. What follows is the version of the conversation our engineers have with customers most weeks.
An electric vibrator motor does not shake an entire machine. In an internal vibrator it is the drive unit sitting at the top of the hose, and its rotation is converted into rapid eccentric movement, either inside the poker head itself or through a flexible shaft. That movement is what pushes air out of the mix.
The head does the vibrating. The motor is what keeps that vibration honest, hour after hour, in a mix that is doing its best to slow it down.
Two numbers describe the result. Frequency is how many times the head oscillates each minute, written as VPM or in hertz. Amplitude is how far the head travels on each stroke. High frequency with modest amplitude is precise and gentle on formwork; heavier amplitude moves stiff mixes but asks more of the motor and the operator.
The practical test of a drive unit is whether it holds frequency under load. A motor that slows as soon as the head sinks into a low-slump mix forces operators to leave the poker in one place for too long, and that is where real damage begins.
Info: To convert VPM to hertz, divide by sixty. A 12,000 VPM unit runs at 200 Hz, which is why high-frequency vibrators feel smoother and finish formed surfaces more cleanly than older belt-driven heads.
Most buyer questions come down to one thing in the end: will the parts fit. An electric vibrator motor is one component of a small system, and the system only works when every piece matches the next.
Corded units are usually single-phase, 110 V or 220 to 240 V, in the 1 to 2 kW class, with a metal or aluminium shell that doubles as a heat sink. High-frequency electronic motors carry their own converter and drive the head directly at 200 Hz. Handheld versions mount the motor on a short frame with a carrying handle, which suits repairs, precast benches and small pours where dragging a long hose is more trouble than it is worth.
This is the joint where motor meets shaft, and it is the part that most often decides whether an order works or comes back. Screw-thread couplings are the simplest and the most common in general export. Quick couplers, pin joints and claw joints are regional standards, and none of them swaps for another without an adapter.
Shaft length runs from roughly three to six metres, and head diameter from about 25 mm for narrow columns up to 70 mm for mass pours. The shaft carries the rotation; the head turns it into vibration. A shaft that is starting to wear shows up as heat and lost vibration long before it fails completely, which is why spare shafts belong in the same quotation as the machines.
There is no universally best vibrator, only the one that matches the pour in front of you. The table below is the version we hand to customers who are building a vibrator range for their own market.
| Application | Head diameter | Typical frequency | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slabs, footings, foundation work | 45 to 60 mm | 12,000 VPM | Keep insertions roughly 400 mm apart |
| Columns, walls, dense reinforcement | 25 to 38 mm | 12,000 to 15,000 VPM | A slimmer head reaches around congested rebar cages |
| Mass concrete and thick sections | 60 to 75 mm | 12,000 VPM | Longer consolidation, withdrawn slowly |
| Precast, repairs and patch work | 25 to 32 mm | 15,000 VPM | Handheld or short-shaft units are easier to control |
| Stiff, low-slump mixes | 38 to 50 mm | 12,000 VPM, higher amplitude | Needs reserve power; watch motor temperature |
Warning: Over-vibration is a real failure mode. Leaving a head in one spot too long moves coarse aggregate away from the paste and leaves a weak, segregated zone that no surface finish will hide. Withdraw the poker slowly, but keep it moving.
Export vibrator motors look similar in photographs and behave very differently in the field, because the connecting geometry follows local habit. Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia each settled on their own joint long before anyone worried about a global standard.
The differences are millimetres on a drawing and impossible to ignore on site. If a contractor's existing heads and hoses are Japanese pin type, a Chinese quick-coupler motor is simply the wrong purchase, however good the motor itself may be.
Success: Before ordering, ask for a photograph of the existing coupling next to a measurement of the pin diameter. It takes two minutes on the customer's side and prevents an entire container of unusable drive units.
The power source decides where a vibrator can work and how much weight the operator carries between insertions.
Mains-powered, single-phase and built for continuous use, these are the workhorse choice for foundations and slabs where a site supply or generator is already running. A little heavier, considerably cheaper to own, and easy to service with parts that any workshop can source.
The converter sits inside the housing and the head runs at 200 Hz. Shafts are lighter, drag is lower and formed surfaces finish noticeably better. On dense reinforcement the smaller head does its work without hanging up, which keeps the crew moving at a steady rhythm.
Handheld 220 V units suit small pours, repairs and precast benches. For sites with no supply at all, brushless 21 V machines now do genuine work rather than decorative work, and they free the crew from cable management entirely. We published a short note on the launch of a high-performance battery concrete vibrator poker for readers who want the detail on how that platform came together.
From the manufacturing side, most costly mistakes trace back to a specification written from a price list rather than from a jobsite.
Danger: Water and electricity deserve respect. Every unit should be earthed and protected by an RCD where local rules require it, never lifted by its cable, and inspected before each shift. A cracked housing or a frayed lead is a stop-work finding, not a nuisance.
Our own plant covers roughly 10,000 square metres near Ningbo, close enough to Ningbo and Shanghai ports to keep freight predictable for repeat orders. Fifteen years in power tools has taught us that quality control has to start with incoming materials and in-process checks, not with a final inspection sheet, because the promise we are really selling is simple: an operator who stays safe and a machine that keeps working for years.
Choose an electric vibrator motor the way you would choose the head it drives: by the pour, the mix and the crew using it. Frequency and head size decide the quality of consolidation. Coupling type decides whether the tool can be used at all. And the motor's ability to hold frequency under load decides how much work you actually get out of it across a shift.
If you are building a vibrator range for your market, we are glad to look at your drawings, your existing heads and hoses, and the voltages your customers genuinely have on site. Send the details, or come and watch the line running.
